Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the year. In Yom Kippur we pray g-d for forgiveness. In the year we always do a lot of mistakes, Sins and crimes. On Yom Kippur, G-d says if you sorry I will forgive you.

The name - Yom Kippur

The name Kippur means forgiveness, means pardon, and means penance. This name tells us the main idea in Yom Kippur: forgiveness, regret. But the g-d forgiveness is only for the things between g-d and the Israelis people, things between each other g-d doesn't forgive in Yom Kippur and we must say sorry to each other.

The history

Yom Kippur - Jewish man pray The Torah tells us that on the seventh day of Sivan, Moshe climbed Mount Sinai and stayed there forty days. On the forty day (the seventeenth day of Tamuz) the Israeli nation waited Moshe but they didn't saw him, they thought him dead and told Aharon to do other leader a golden calf. However in the Israeli nation were non Jew wizard, they cause the golden calf to walk and they said: "this is your g-d, Israel".

While this situation happened Moshe was on Mount Sinai and g-d told Moshe to back to the Israelis camping hold the two tablets of stone on which the Ten Commandments were engraved. When Moshe saw what happened he dropped the two tablets of stone on which the Ten Commandments were engraved to the ground. Then Moshe burn the golden calf, grinded it, mixed it with water and gave this to the Israelis people who sinned. Then Moshe called all the Israeli people who believe g-d. All the Levi's family gathered, Moshe told them to help him to kill the Israelis people who sinned and he climbed again to Mount Sinai. Moshe prayed for forgiveness and after forty days (the first day of Elol) g-d told him to build another two tablets of stone on which the Ten Commandments were engraved and after forty days (Yom Kippur – the tenth day of Tishrey) g-d forgave the Israeli people. so Yom Kippur is determined to day for forgiveness.

The orders in Yom Kippur

On Yom Kippur we mustn't eat and drink, on this day we leave our needs and just pray. This day show the contact between us and g-d. The Torah order us that on Yom Kippur we must suffer and our sages of blessed memory taught us that the suffering means five things we mustn't do:

  • we mustn't eat and drink on Yom Kippur
  • We mustn't wear leather shoes on Yom Kippur
  • We mustn't bath and wash on Yom Kippur
  • We must anoint oneself with perfumes or lotions on Yom Kippur
  • We mustn't marital relations on Yom Kippur

On Yom Kippur we pray five prayer services: in the evening Ma'ariv (a'rvit), in the morning Shacharit, before noon Musaf, afternoon Mincha, and before the sunset Ne'ilah then we prayer weekday Ma'ariv (a'rvit) we do Havdala (ceremony at termination of Sabbath or festival) and then we can eat.

The great priest's work

On Yom Kippur in Beit HaMikdash the great priest did all works and just in a few works regular priest helped him. In the morning the great priest sacrificed ship for the regular sacrifice, and sacrificed the irregular sacrifice – the Kippur's sacrifice one bull, one ram and seven ships. Then he did all the Kippur's acts – he went to the Holy of Holies room, burns the incense and prayed for the Israeli nation. He confessed about his sins, sins of the priests, the sins of the Israeli people. He read in the Torah and did a lot of works.

Booth building

On the evening after Yom Kippur we need to build booth or to finish the building of the booth.
