Chanukah

Chanukah is one of the Jewish holidays. Chanukah is also called "Festival of Lights". Chanukah is celebrated for eight days started on the 25th day of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar and ended on the second day of Tevet (November – December in the Gregorian calendar). Chanukah is one of the orders which our sages determined to remember the miracle which was.

The history of Chanukah

Antiochus (the king of Greece who conquered the land of Israel) looted the Temple, massacred Jews, and Forbade Judaism (Judaism was outlawed) and he build altar to his  idol in the Temple. Matitiho and his five sons John, Simon, Elazar, Jonathan and Judah lead a rebellion against Antiochus.
After year Matitiho died and Judah takes his place as leader, and led the Jewish revolt to success. The Temple was liberated and rededicated.
The Jewish army was small and unarmed and the military of Greece was big and armed, however the Jewish army won this was a miracle.
In the 25th I Kislev the Jewish priest (Matitiho and his five sons John, Simon, Elazar, Jonathan and Judah was priests) entered to the Temple and rededicated it. They wanted  to light the lamp but they had no oil all the oil was Open and generates. Then they found one small cruse (which looks for one day) and there was a miracle and it had sufficed for eight day then they did oil.

The orders

In Chanukah we must to light a candelabrum:
1. on the first day of Chanukah (the 25th day of Kislev) we light one candle.
2. On the second day of Chanukah (the 26th day of Kislev) we light two candles.
3. On the third day of Chanukah (the 27th day of Kislev) we light three candles.
4. On the fourth day of Chanukah (the 28th of Kislev) we light four candles.
5. On the fifth day of Chanukah (the 29th day of Kislev) we light five candles.
6. On the sixth day of Chanukah (the 30th day of Kislev when the month Kislev is full but when he less this day is the first day of Tevet) we light six candles.
7. On the seventh day of Chanukah (the first day of Tevet or the second day of Tevet) we light seven candles.
8. On the eighth day of Chanukah (the second day of Tevet or the third day of Tevet) we light eight candles.


Women are (also) must light candles because they were also in the miracle.
On the eight days of Chanukah we say the Praise (part of the Jewish pray) and we thank and praise g-d about the miracles ("al hanissim") in Modim (penultimate blessing in the Shmoneh Esrei prayer).

The kids play with spinning tops on Chanukah. In the land of Israel on the spinning top is written "Big Miracle Was Here" (in Hebrew) and out of Israel is written "Big Miracle Was There".

Chanukah money

The adults give Chanukah money to kids. The Chanukah money is given to the child to charity. The money is usually small some cents.

Fried sweet foods

The miracle was that one small cruse sufficed for eight days. So we eat fried foods memory of the miracle which happened with oil. We eat Latkes and donuts.
